Comments:
Background

This appears to have been a brief play given after an intermission during a long program at the Naka Theater in 3/1822. The plot is unknown to us.

Design

There was a vogue for boldly patterned backgrounds in the 1820s. Here, Ebijûrô seems to float before the checker-board design. He holds a large ax and wears a black robe with the Ichikawa mimasu mon (three rice-measure crests), three concentric squares emblematic of the Ichikawa family of actors.
