Background

Tamikuni designs are quite rare; also uncommon are scenes, as here, with actors on the hanamichi (lit., "flower path"), the walkway that extends from stage-right into the audience and along which dramatic entrances, exits, and action frequently take place, to the delight of theater patrons. Note the two lit candles on wooden stands, front and back of the actor, as well as the cartouche at the upper right in the form of a hanging chôchin (lantern).

Design

The song inscribed above, signed by Shishô (at the far left, and also on Tsurusuke's robes), is a kiyari or rhythmic verse used to accompany strenuous work, as when a group struggles to move trees or boulders. Here, the kiyari speaks of beating out a rhythm, with farmers using a taiko (drum) or clapping hands, and smithies also using drums.
