Background

E-awase taikôki (Chronicle of honor [Hideyoshi] compared in pictures: 絵合太功記) was an adaptation of the various Taikôki mono (Stories about the Taikô [Toyotomi Hideyoshi]: 太閤記物 or 太閣記物). For the play title, the second and third characters in Taikôki (Hideyoshi's self-selected title as ruler)) were changed to 功記, meaning chronicle of merit or honor. Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1536-98) ruled much of Japan by 1585, and nearly unified the country by the end of 1591. The historical Hideyoshi was a brilliant strategist for Oda Nobunaga (1534-82), winning several key campaigns. Upon Nobunaga's death, Hideyoshi tracked down the turn-coat general Akechi Mitsuhide (responsible for the defeat and death of Oda), killing Akechi and taking over Oda's armies.

Kistusaburô II performs as Suzuki Magoichi, a historical warrior who fought against Oda Nobunaga.

Another impression is in the British Museum (1983,0523,0.1.5).
